One day when I was checking my email, something caught my eye on the homepage of Yahoo- dress sculptures from all 50 states. There were pictures of dresses made to represent each state with unique materials. The artist behind all these dresses is Robin Barcus Slonina. Robin is an installation and performance artist who creates site-specific works of art.
A few years ago, as Robin was traveling to promote her art work all over the nation, she was inspired by the defining quirks and characteristics of each state. Robin is creating dress sculptures in each of the fifty states in the USA. So far, there are 8 dresses, including a dress made entirely of poker chips for- what else?- the state of Nevada. On her blog, she explains the process of creating and designing these one-of-a-kind dresses, as well as why she chose specific materials to use.
If you're interested in seeing one artist's interpretation of what makes a state special via fashion, keep checking in on Robin Barcus Slonina’s blog and see which state she does next! http://stateofdress.blogspot.com/
This first dress here is New York's, made entirely from garbage bags filled with newspaper.
Nevada's casino chip dress was made by drilling six holes in each chip and connecting them all with zip ties.
Maine’s pine cone dress consist of hundreds of pinecone all attached together with wire.
This is Wyoming creek dress that is made of fresh branches woven into the willow frame.
12 feet tall branches from white pine trees were used for the state of Wisconsin.
